Pry the piece of tile up gently and slowly until it separates from the wall with ease. If the toilet or a pedestal sink is covering the tile turn off the shutoff valve on the water supply line. In some cases the only way to tear out the ceramic tile is with heavy equipment such as a jackhammer or air chisel. Again do not pry away aggressively to prevent damage to the plaster.

The only way the old tile was coming out of my bathroom was with a sledge hammer. When you believe you have removed or cut away most of the grout stop and examine your work. Your demo was so neat and tamed.
